Google tightens controls on pornography

So Google has again changed how its SafeSearch explicit content blocking for images works. I was reading this article by Jennifer O’Mahony from The Telegraph about it and my reaction was pretty much “yeah whatever.”

Then I got to this part:

Outraged users took to social networks to claim the change to Google amounted to censorship, with the topic pushed onto the front page of Reddit after being “upvoted” by users. Discussions of how to get around the restrictions ran to hundreds of comments.

“You can take away our privacy, but if you mess with porn, the internet is going to be MAD,” wrote user okeman.

“What is this? communism?! BRING BACK THE PORN!” added user Fake_Cakeday.

Ms. O’Mahony, I am terribly sorry you had to write this. I feel for you.

In a widely-circulated 2009 TED talk, Gallop told the crowd that she must routinely correct her young partners: “Actually, no, thank you very much, I would much rather you did not come on my face.” …

Gallop’s point isn’t that certain sex acts are inherently bad—just that talking about them makes everyone’s sex life better. To facilitate the conversation, in 2009 she created a real-talk sex-ed website called “Make Love Not Porn” to dispel some of the common “myths” perpetuated by porn’s monolithic presentation of human sexuality. …

Later, Gallop realized she could do more than just annotate the porn’s industry’s product—she could compete with it. This month, she launched a beta version of a crowdsourced online platform wherein amateurs and porn stars alike are invited to tape themselves engaging in “real world sex.”

I’ll just be honest and admit that I’m linking this almost entirely for its use of the phrase “crowdsourced porn.”

Student claims that a junior high teacher was moonlighting as a porn star were initially dismissed after school officials said they couldn’t find any images of her on the Internet.

The investigation was quickly restarted, however, when other teachers showed them downloads from smartphones, and the officials realized the school computer system blocked access to sex sites.

Oh dear.

Given a chance to play games, Nevada prison inmates use PlayStations to watch porn

Associated Press:

Corrections officials at Nevada State Prison have pulled the plug on a pilot program allowing inmates to use PlayStations at Nevada State Prison after inmates were caught using them to watch pornographic movies.

…

Prison spokesman Steve Suwe said inmates were allowed to buy the PlayStation II units along with games rated “E” for everybody. No violent games or those with sexual situations and nothing above PG-13 were permitted. 

“The problem is the PlayStation II can play DVDs,” Suwe said. 

I don’t think anyone could have possibly predicted this outcome.

So far, 18 inmates have sued in Carson City’s small-claims court, demanded to be reimbursed for their costs. 

They accuse the prison, Warden Greg Smith and Cox of “wrongful confiscation of authorized, approved personal property.” 

“I want full reimbursement for what I paid through the canteen, a total of $601.16,” wrote inmate Albert Dawson in his claim petition.

Oh dear.
