Poland probes artist’s claim he used Holocaust ash

AP report:

Polish prosecutors are investigating a Swedish artist’s claim that he used the ashes of Holocaust victims to make a painting, an act that could carry a prison term.

…

Spokeswoman Beata Syk-Jankowska said Tuesday that prosecutors in the eastern city of Lublin have opened an investigation to check whether there is truth to the artist’s claim. She said there is no evidence and prosecutors are acting on media reports.

This could be a completely false publicity stunt. Of course, it could be a true publicity stunt. :(

A man stole a physician’s identity and pretended to be a doctor for a year in South Carolina, and now investigators are combing through medical records to see whether he harmed any of the hundreds of patients he treated, authorities said.

[Ernest] Addo did have some medical training, and acted enough like a doctor not to raise any serious suspicion beyond one nurse — interviewed after Addo’s Aug. 24, arrest — who wondered why he consulted ask.com when she questioned his treatment plan, Metts said.

Yes, that’s right. Think about how the next doctor you see could be an impostor without a medical license who has been there for a year without detection. Feel it.

Today, on the first and only episode of Bizarre Video Games Saturday here on Nullary Sources, comes a lengthy video showing off the PlayStation game Paranoiascape. Paranoiascape is a first-person horror pinball game designed by Screaming Mad George, who’s done special effects for movies like Predator.

Iwant wrote up the game for Hardcore Gaming 101, but it must be seen in motion.

David Pickup, a Los Angeles-area counselor who specializes in reparative therapy, said he has helped many clients “maximize their heterosexual potential,” when they have come to him because they believe there is a cause-and-effect reason, such as sexual abuse, for their same-sex attraction.

“It’s a very tough, very emotional journey,” he said.

Emphasis added by myself to highlight an exceptionally reprehensible quote by Mr. Pickup. I gagged when I read those four words in the paper.

A church pastor in Pennsylvania could face felony charges for staging a fake kidnapping of youth group students in order to teach them about religious persecution.

Teenagers at the Glad Tidings Assembly of God Church in Middletown, Pa., were surprised when they attended a youth group meeting at the church on March 21 and were ambushed by what seemed to be real kidnappers.

I don’t have any words for this that aren’t vulgar.

The Pentagon struggled on Wednesday to clarify confusion created by an independent report that said unidentified body parts of some victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks were incinerated and dumped in a landfill. Top officials promised a full accounting to the victims’ families.

Gen. Norton A. Schwartz, the chief of staff of the Air Force, told reporters that only some remains from the Sept. 11 attack on the Pentagon — but not remains from the plane crash site in Shanksville, Pa., “as best we can tell” — were ordered incinerated by the Department of Defense in what he described as a common practice at the time.

His words were at odds with the independent report, released on Tuesday, into failings at the mortuary at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware. The report said that the mortuary had body parts of some Sept. 11 victims from both the Pentagon and Shanksville incinerated and then dumped in a landfill — a startling disclosure that was the latest to tarnish the reputation of Dover, hallowed ground for the military and the entry point for the nation’s war dead.

Oh geez.

Josefina Vazquez Mota, a 51-year-old economist, became the first female presidential candidate from any of Mexico’s major parties when she convincingly won the National Action Party’s primary.

Excellent.

Mrs Vazquez Mota said that she had experienced sexism first-hand during her campaign.

“One of the hardest questions I have been asked is ‘How will you manage the army if you are having menstrual cramps?’” she told a Mexican newspaper.

A former Fall River dentist has pleaded guilty to charges that involved substituting paper clips for stainless steel posts while performing root canals, the attorney general’s office said.

Michael Clair, 53, of Maryland, allegedly billed Medicaid for the cost of the stainless steel posts he didn’t use and is facing Medicaid fraud charges. He also pleaded guilty Monday to charges of assault and battery, larceny over $250, tampering with evidence, intimidation of a witness, and illegally prescribing hydrocodone, Combunox, and Percocet.

Gwinnett teacher who resigned apologizes for writing slavery-themed questions

A Gwinnett schools investigation found former Beaver Ridge Elementary School teacher Luis Rivera was the author of a third-grade homework assignment that used slave beatings to teach math concepts.

In a statement to school officials obtained by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Thursday, Rivera, a teacher at the school since August 2008, apologized and said some of the questions he wrote were in “poor taste.”

Rivera’s 20-question homework assignment used slave beatings and picking cotton to link lessons about ex-slave and abolitionist Frederick Douglass to math computation. One of the problems read: “If Frederick got two beatings per day, how many beatings did he get in one week?”

What the fuck.
