Osama bin Laden aimed to assassinate President Barack Obama but directed fellow al-Qaida fighters to leave Vice President Joe Biden alone, describing him as “totally unprepared” to take over and predicting a “crisis” in America if that happened, according to a newly declassified letter from the terrorist mastermind.

…

“They are not to target visits by US Vice President Biden, Secretary of Defense Gates, Joint Chiefs of Staff (Chairman) Mullen, or the Special Envoy to Pakistan and Afghanistan Holbrook (sic). The groups will remain on the lookout for Obama or Petraeus,” the Saudi-born extremist wrote.

“The reason for concentrating on them is that Obama is the head of infidelity and killing him automatically will make Biden take over the presidency for the remainder of the term, as it is the norm over there. Biden is totally unprepared for that post, which will lead the US into a crisis. …” bin Laden continued.

CNN Poll: Majority in U.S. say bin Laden in hell

So do Americans think that the founder and leader of the al Qaeda terrorist network is now in hell?

According to a CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll released Tuesday, 61 percent of the public says yes, with one in ten saying no and nearly a quarter unsure.

“Not all Americans believe in hell – a point of view reflected in the relatively large number of ‘don’t know’ responses – and many religions don’t include punishment in an afterlife as part of their teachings,” says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. “Nonetheless, the six in ten who say bin Laden is in hell reflects how strongly many Americans feel that bin Laden was an evil figure.”

“This is one question on which there is little partisan division – at least six in ten Democrats, independents and Republicans all believe bin Laden is in hell,” adds Holland.

Wolf Blitzer also announced this poll result on air.

Quitting watching CNN was, for the most part, the best decision I’ve ever made in my life.

So much of this photo is mundane. It’s largely an ordinary office conference room — the table and the chairs look just as uncomfortable and awkward as the ones I’m used to, for example. But it’s also obviously not mundane. Great stuff.

So last night I discovered Twitter user ReallyVirtual, who apparently inadvertently liveblogged the attacks. I ended up writing up a pretty good summary of what he saw and had to say about it all on Quora. Probably my favorite bit:

3am, he’s tweeting with a user who lived closer to the area where the helo was, talking about more helicopter activity, and then says: “‘safer’ is a relative term that has lost its meaning in Pakistan” Scary.

Scary indeed.

Now, Obama has fulfilled his campaign promise to capture the terrorist leader, so did Fox News give credit where is due? This morning, Fox and Friends approvingly played a clip of Bush from shortly after 9/11, saying, “President George W. Bush promised to the nation that Osama bin Laden would be caught any way possible.” “We did finally get him,” host Brian Kilmeade said after the clip.

In what is likely to become a chorus on the right, the conservative Heritage Foundation’s president wrote this morning that “Bin Laden’s elimination vindicates U.S. strategy in the region, started under President George W. Bush.”

Update: House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) issued a statement praising Bush, writing, “I commend President Obama who has followed the vigilance of President Bush in bringing Bin Laden to justice.”

Oh dear.

Alexis Madrigal writes for the Atlantic. The main thrust of the article is quite good and worth reading, but this nugget could not go without sharing.

When Barack Obama was elected president, I was living in San Francisco, and it being an Obama stronghold, his win was greeted with joy. Hipsters filled the intersection at 19th and Valencia. Happy people hugged and shared beers. People did dumb things. Then, a young man climbed up on his friend’s shoulders with a silver trumpet and started to play the most beautiful rendition of “America the Beautiful” I’ve ever heard.
