A daily miasma of frivolity by two wanna-be cultural critics. Or: just, like, some good links, dude.

So this Zoltan Orosz guy can absolutely shred on the accordion. I’m not sure if the piece in this video has a name other than “Balkan Tune,” but that’s what it seems to be called. Just wait for 2:23.

I’m back from an (unannounced) hiatus for WWDC. Have some Camera Obscura performing “French Navy”. Tracyanne Campbell’s outfit… wow. I think I need to go lie down.

Hellllo everybody! Today we have a special treat. Toby “Radiation” Fox has put together what he calls an “anti-remix” using the Super Metroid soundset and it’s frickin’ awesome!  Here’s what he had to say about it:

Another “anti-remix,” this time using instrumentation from Super Metroid, with motifs similar to the battle with Spore Spawn and Mother Brain. I imagine it playing during one of those horrendous timed sequences where you’re urgently escaping from something but ALSO have to fight through a gauntlet of crazy bosses.”

So this is crazy.

I spent basically all of yesterday jamming to the music from the first stage of The Adventures of Bayou Billy, so now seems like an opportune time to post Evil Horde’s arrangement of it (and another stage theme), “El Lagarto” from OverClocked ReMix.

Latin disco funk? Oh yes.

Apparently people uploading full albums to YouTube is a thing, so here’s one: today’s the release date of Neil Young and Crazy Horse’s latest collab, a collection of American standards like “Clementine”, “This Land is Your Land”, “Oh Susannah”, in their signature hard rock / grunge style. Some great takes on some true-blue American songs from a dirty Canadian red.

Let’s have Joe Hisaishi two weeks in a row. In fact, let’s have him forever.

This piece is “Sosuke’s Voyage” from the Ponyo soundtrack. There are a few other tunes I’d much rather have posted than this, but a ton of the soundtrack has been pulled from YouTube. How dare the copyright owners exercise their legal rights!

This soundtrack is kind of interesting because of its hilariously overt Wagner influence. This piece, however, shows none of that! Instead we’ve got a vaguely American second half which is pretty cool.

Dinosaur Jr., then newly-reuinted, perform a 7-minute version of “Forget the Swan”. In-fucking-credible.

In 2003, the Japanese jazz fusion band T-SQUARE held a concert tour titled SPIRITS. This is their song “Sunnyside Cruise” from that tour.

Check out how the audience has the piece memorized, erupting when the opening riff starts and cheering in advance of Takeshi Itoh’s sax melodies at 1:41 and 1:58. They are getting this excited about a jazz fusion band. This is how big T-SQUARE is.

(I have it memorized too.)

Cole Porter’s “Night and Day” performed by Lady Kim and the New Japan Philharmonic World Dream Orchestra (yes really). Conducted and arranged by the legendary Joe Hisashi.

BBC News:

Bass guitarist Donald “Duck” Dunn, who played with Booker T and the MGs, has died in Tokyo aged 70.

The MGs were the house band for Stax Records, and Dunn can be heard on songs such as Otis Redding’s Respect and Sam and Dave’s Hold On, I’m Comin’.

Let’s all listen to “Hold On, I’m Comin’” in tribute.

Also, previously on Nullary Sources: “Green Onions.”
