A daily miasma of frivolity by two wanna-be cultural critics. Or: just, like, some good links, dude.

Here’s “Evolve,” an original song written for Gatorade’s “Gatorade Has Evolved” ad from 2010. It was written and produced by David Banner with vocals by Quinn.

When I use the “advertising” tag it’s usually because I’m bagging on something, but that is not the case here. This is quite a charming soul/spiritual throwback with not at all vacuous lyrics. A real treat.

Update: Seems like the YouTube embed above isn’t taking you to the right time index. This link should take you to the right spot in the video.

UPDATE: I’m being told that this video is not dubbed, and that all the music is in fact coming from him.

Arvo Pärt’s Symphony No. 3 (1971).

Pärt is a fascinating composer — Beethoven-esque in that he straddles two eras. His early works are decidedly serialist but after some political and creative problems, he went silent for six years. When he came back, he’d developed a new style, language even: tintinnabuli based on his study of chant and choral music.

Symphony No. 3 is a transitional work, completed just before the aforementioned silent period. You’ll hear a little bit of everything in the above first movement — even the octatonic “Russian” scale.

I was trying to find a voice clip of Alpha 5 from Mighty Morphin Power Rangers uttering his “ayeyaiyaiyaiyaiyai” catchphrase when I stumbled across this piece of music that I had previously repressed from my memory.

Here for your supreme enjoyment is the hopefully probably fictional “Power Jet” with “Ayeyaiyai (Alpha Song)” from the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie: Original Soundtrack Album.
