A daily miasma of frivolity by two wanna-be cultural critics. Or: just, like, some good links, dude.

It’s the Milk Truck, spreading the message that nursing mothers have the need and the right to feed their infants in public.

Jill Miller, an artist and mother, said she got the idea after the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh asked her to do a project of her choice last year.

I like to think I’m pro-breastfeeding, but that doesn’t change the fact that this is easily the most garish thing I’ve seen this year.

These here are the remnants of the H. L. Hunley, a Confederate submarine from the Civil War. Reuters has an excellent article about it:

Scientists have found the vessel to be a more sophisticated feat of engineering than historians had thought, said Michael Drews, director of Clemson’s Warren Lasch Conservation Center.

“It has the ballast tanks fore and aft, the dive planes were counterbalanced, the propeller was shrouded,” Drews said. “It’s just got all of the elements that the modern submarines have, updated.”

MSNBC’s Photoblog has a few photos of it, including the one accompanying this post, taken by Bruce Smith for the AP.

Craig Welch, The Seattle Times:

It was Monday morning, Jan. 2, and the four Seattle hikers were more than halfway through a beautiful weekend of winter camping at Mount Rainier National Park (which remains closed until Saturday).

Now someone in a chopper was barking a garbled message through a loudspeaker.

“We thought we heard ‘A ranger has been shot and killed, shooter at large,’ ” camper Brian Vogt wrote in an email exchange with The Seattle Times. But it wasn’t all that clear.

That’s when the pilot let fly his backup plan. He dropped a coffee cup with a warning scrawled in ink: “A ranger has been shot shooter at large. Call on cell if able to Pierce Co Sheriff.”

The above photos, via MSNBC’s PhotoBlog, were taken by one of the campers, Jen Berthiaume. She and her party made it out okay, and the suspected shooter of the ranger was found dead later. Check Welch’s article for the full story.

Lauren Steussy for NBCSanDiego.com:

A man dressed as Gumby attempted to rob a Rancho Penasquitos 7-Eleven early Monday morning — but his efforts failed, in part because the clerk couldn’t take him seriously.

The suspect told the clerk at the store on Carmel Mountain Road that he was robbing the store, San Diego Police Detective Gary Hassen said.

The clerk, thinking the man was playing a prank, responded that he didn’t have time and that he had to clean. Video surveillance shows the suspect fumbling in his pocket for a non-existent — or inaccessible — gun.

What.

According to MSNBC’s PhotoBlog, this shot by AP photographer Keith Srakocic shows Pittsburgh Pirates players Casey McGehee (left) and Garrett Jones (right) nearly avoiding a collision while trying to cover a fly ball.

I maintain that this photo was taken in the middle of some elaborate high five routine.

Here’s a photo of a boy swimming in Islamabad, Pakistan, taken by Muhammed Muheisen of the AP.

UPDATE: I’m being told that this is in fact a picture of two boys. I regret the error.

(Via MSNBC’s PhotoBlog, which posted this photo with the unfortunate title “At swim, two boys.”

Colin:
Title is a pun on At Swim-Two-Birds
‘Ili:

This photograph of Nicki Minaj performing on Good Morning America, taken by Jemal Countess for Getty Images, is not explainable in this universe.

Seriously, the first time I saw this, I thought the Dots thing on the right side of the pic was a balloon, like the gold thing it’s on also appears to be.

I only realized just now that they’re SOCKS. ON ANOTHER PAIR OF LEGS. COMING FROM OUT OF THE FRAME. WHAT IS HAPPENING HERE

(Via MSNBC’s PhotoBlog, where for inscrutable reasons Jonathan Woods thought it would be classy to pair this shot with one of Minaj brandishing fried chicken.)
