The small, insect-eating lizard was discovered in the badlands of northeastern Montana—its fossil preserved in an area called the Hell Creek formation. Less than a foot long, it had elaborate teeth with three cusps on each tooth and a slender jaw. Some 65 million years ago, it went extinct. And now, it is named for the 44th president of the United States: Obamadon gracilis.

What the birthers see is The Other. They look in the cedar chest and see their calligraphic Birth Certificate with flourishes and footprints and gold seals and doctor names, and take that as What A Birth Certificate Is. It’s ceremonial, official-looking, and old-fashioned, traits that they associate with authority. When they see a cold, austere, government-generated computer form without the ceremonial flourishes they expect, they disbelieve. It Is Not Like Mine. and that plays into the fundamental bias—He Is Not Like Me.

From the official White House Flickr stream: Obama, Biden, Sec. Clinton, Adm. Mike Mullen and many others look on as the operation to capture OBL unfolded.

So much of this photo is mundane. It’s largely an ordinary office conference room — the table and the chairs look just as uncomfortable and awkward as the ones I’m used to, for example. But it’s also obviously not mundane. Great stuff.
