Modern Mechanix: “SEX in Advertising”

Modern Mechanix is usually good for a lark. This week’s recommendation comes from the march 1964 issue of Sexology.

On the plus side, it makes me feel good that this was being acknowledged and discussed as early as the 1960s.

However:

“Today,” said Justice J. Erwin Shapiro in what may be a historic censorship case, “skirts are shorter and the outlined erogenous areas of women are taken matter-of-factly. The under-garment model has dropped the mask from her eyes and looks at you slyly as she displays the advantages of any-brand’s lira and girdle in advertisements published in ladies’ magazines and our most respected newspapers and in telecasts coming into the home… .”

This new McDonald’s ad that appeared on the side of the road in California has more staying power than any regular billboard because it’s actually illegal to remove. The sign is actually the result of a seed bombing where the shape of the famous golden arches is made up of yellow California Poppies.

Here’s “Evolve,” an original song written for Gatorade’s “Gatorade Has Evolved” ad from 2010. It was written and produced by David Banner with vocals by Quinn.

When I use the “advertising” tag it’s usually because I’m bagging on something, but that is not the case here. This is quite a charming soul/spiritual throwback with not at all vacuous lyrics. A real treat.

I’ve been seeing TV spots for this exercise system, The Rack, for a little while now. I’d never buy a workout thingummy from the tube in the first place, but it doesn’t really seem to me like a good idea to name your product after an ancient torture device.

Why are you asking my age? Being that this ad seems to be targeting Californians, I would think “do you live in California” would be a more logical gatekeeper question.

The AP:

Baseball’s new labor contract includes more video replay, the chance for a longer All-Star break and a small, but likely welcome perk for players: the chance to get a private room instead of a roommate during spring training.

… for players thinking about selling ads on their bodies, MLB has thought ahead. The agreement says “no player may have any visible markings or logos tattooed on his body” as part of the uniform regulations.

“Just trying to head something off at the pass,” said Rob Manfred, baseball’s executive vice president for labor relations.
